FOOTBALL: Culpeper County appealing ejections of QB Robson, OL Phipps

Culpeper County High School Athletic Director Mike Wills confirmed Tuesday that CCHS is appealing the ejection of quarterback Jeremy Robson and offensive lineman Zach Phipps at the end of last weekend’s 14-6 loss at Fauquier.

Wills said he initiated the appeal process first thing Monday morning, and hopes to have an answer by Wednesday.

He said the appeal will first be voted on by the principals from CCHS and Fauquier and the commissioner of the referee’s association that officiated the game, and will then go to the Virginia High School League if a unanimous decision isn’t made.

If the appeal isn’t granted, per VHSL rules, Robson and Phipps will both be ineligible for Friday’s Cannonball Classic at Eastern View.

After the officials were slow in placing the ball for play with time winding down last Friday in Warrenton, Robson and Phipps allegedly made inappropriate remarks and personal foul flags were thrown.

There was no time left on the clock, though, so instead of being able to mark 15 yards off for the penalties, the officials ejected both players after regulation had expired, which Wills said is unheard of.

Culpeper County head coach Ken Wakefield could not be reached for comment, but without going into specifics, Wills did say Robson and Phipps may be subject to discipline from the team even if the appeal is granted.

Friday’s game is the Blue Devils’ regular-season finale. With Culpeper (3-6) sitting at No. 14 in the 3A East Power Points rankings, it’s also the Devils’ last chance to secure their first playoff berth in more than a decade.

The top 16 teams in each region advance to the playoffs.
